Which emails do you check on mobile devices?
We asked our colleagues if they check their business-related emails on their phones. The results confirmed the reports: Most respondents, regardless of their age, use their phones, tablets, and other mobile devices to check both their personal and work emails.
With all the talk on how important it is to make your emails responsive to work on smartphones and tablets, as well as desktop computers, we thought we’d find out how many of our colleagues check their business-related emails on their phone. The results confirmed the reports: Most respondents, regardless of their age, use their phones, tablets, and other mobile devices to check both their personal and work emails. In fact, 84% of those who responded to our quick poll check email on the go.
Why do you check both business and personal email accounts on mobile devices?
The comments we received mostly mentioned that respondents use whichever device is handy, not distinguishing between desktop and mobile since their email accounts are set up on both. Respondents found it easy and efficient, and said that everyone assumes they will be checking email on their phones when away from the office. One person said the main purpose of his phone is to keep connected with email while away from his desk, as he is frequently out of the office.
Why do you check only certain emails on mobile devices?
Most respondents who don’t check work emails on mobile mentioned the need to maintain a separation of their business and personal lives. They chose to read their work emails at the office on their work computer, but read their personal emails on their phone or home computer. Some mentioned needing a separate mobile device (often supplied by their employers) to check work email, for business security. And some mentioned wanting a separate mobile device to read personal emails, to maintain their own privacy from their employers. One respondent said the only emails she read on her phone were those from her personal email account that only friends and family know, to avoid wasting time deleting spam.
Very few don’t read email on phones or tablets
Fewer than 3% of respondents said they don’t read emails on their mobile devices, so whether you are creating emails targeted to businesses or consumers, you should plan on making emails responsive, so they look good wherever your recipient reads them.
